[press release]
What do you get when you mix the winner of this years' Tui Award, a Silver Scroll nominee and the winner of an International Songwriting Competition?
A divine and potent cocktail called "Saints and Sinners".
Internationally acclaimed female songsmiths Tami Neilson, Lauren Thomson and Jackie Bristow will be swapping songs and stories in front of audiences on a 12-date national tour in February 2010.
This writers-in-the-round show will be an intimate acoustic evening, three solo artists joining forces on stage and sharing the experiences that inspired their songs, from opening for Johnny Cash and Art Garfunkel to touring from Canada to Europe, the USA to Japan. Drawing comparisons with Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Patty Griffin and Roy Orbison, these women bring 3 unique voices together for a rare collaborative show.
About Tami Neilson:
"Truly top shelf....Tami Neilson has the looks and the voice to get any song across to any audience..." -Randy Bachman of 'The Guess Who'
"...alarmingly good.." - Graham Reid, Elsewhere
Tami is: A Canadian who grew up touring North America with her singing family - kind of country music's answer to the Partridge Family - and relocated to New Zealand after falling in love with a good Kiwi man.
Career highlights: Winning the Tui Award for her first album, Red Dirt Angel, which includes a duet with Johnny Cash's sister Joanne and a title track which was co-written with Dennis Morgan, who wrote the smash hit "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me" for Aretha Franklin and George Michael.
Will talk about: The time she opened as support for legend Johnny Cash, and was mortified because she was wearing pyjamas. Seriously.
About Jackie Bristow:
"Bristow's voice is sophisticated and soulful. Lovers of finely crafted tunes combined with perfectly delivered vocals should definitely listen up." - The Press
"This woman makes you feel as if she's talking to you ... storming heaven's gates, taking no prisoners as she goes. There are love songs throughout which will leave you breathless...superb musicianship, good hooks that flow naturally rather than being contrived, and awesome melodies." - John Shelton Ivany Top 21
Jackie is: Originally a South Island girl from Gore, but between tours in Japan, Australia and the USA, she is now based in Austin, Texas where she is firmly entrenched in the Austin music scene. She is returning to NZ to launch her 3rd album "Freedom", an ode to her homeland.
Career highlights: Opening for Daniel Lanois, Art Garfunkel and Madeline Peryoux. In addition to penning "This is Australia", which won Tourism Australia's Song Competition, her songs have featured in film and television hits such as Outrageous Fortune and Home And Away.
Will talk about: How easy it was for her to do a no-alcohol detox while overseas, however, due to NZ wine, she has officially fallen off the wagon. Cannot be held responsible for what may happen on tour.
About Lauren Thomson:
"If Johnny Cash was a beautiful young woman..."- Cheese On Toast
"Thomson is an affecting singer who really knows how to phrase a line" - Trevor Faville, Waikato Times
Lauren is: A local girl originally from the Waikato that the critics are calling "a deep talent waiting to emerge". A standout in Auckland's live circuit, she has become a much sought after opener and touring partner for prominent musicians.
Career highlights: A nominee of the 2008 APRA Silver Scroll Awards for the title track from her EP, Our Love Is Due, Lauren has forged a well-respected path for her songs by the toughest critics.
Will talk about: How her one and only un-requited love song, Our Love Is Due, actually made the guy (and her now husband) propose to her! Yes!
